Le Derivate

The Fiat 850 was in all its forms a rewarding object for tuners and coachbuilders. I have made an attempt to collect at least one photo of all these derivatives.

Fiat 850's redesigned

The 850's have inspired many bodybuilders to design special models. Mostly it ended up in sport's cars, sometimes in cars with practical use. Some of them are just a click away ....
In a series of articles on this site I will write about a number of them.

850 Derivati

Fiat 850 Vignale, Coupé and Berlina

One of the nicer derivatives of the Fiat 850 comes from Vignale. There, a new version was built based on the Fiat 850 Special, Coupé and Spider, many of which are still in use today.

The Lombardi 850 Grand Prix / Scorpione colors

These color swatches are not commonly found on the internet but if the goal is to be complete, these Lombardi Grand Prix/Scorione swatches are definitely important to show.

All Fiat 850 derivatives.

These are nearly all official derivatives of the Fiat 850; there are still Formula 850s missing; I'll do a separate item about these one day. If you click on the name, a new screen opens with a photo. They are not all equally in focus, but that's also being worked on. If there is a # behind the name you will be linked to another item with more information on this site.

Difference between a Fiat 850 Spider and a Bertone Racer

Although there is nothing wrong with Bertone's design for the Fiat 850 Spider, they also released their own version that is known as the "Bertone Racer". Available as Spider (with optional hardtop) and as Berlinetta with fixed roof. Of course there have to be differences, otherwise you can forget about sales numbers. Italian magazine Quattroruote published an article in 1968 explaining those differences:

And to rub in the true beauty of the 850 Spider, this beautiful picture:

Fiat 850 Fuoriserie, certainly not misfits

The Fiat 850 was a source of inspiration for designers, builders and tinkerers from day one. Allessandro Sannia collected information about these pieces of art and wrote a book about them in the series "Fuoriserie" by publisher "Societa Editrice Il Cammello". A name that sounds a lot better better than "Camel Publishing House" .....

These are the designers/builders that are described, sometimes briefly, sometimes more elaborately:
Abarth, Agosti, Allemano, A.M.S., Arrigoni, Artés, Astech, Atecar, Autoracing, Autotecnica, Autotecnica A. & B., Avia, AZ, Baggioli, Baldi, Begra, Bellasi, Bertone, Biraghi, Birel, Boneschi, Bonetti , Brunetti, BWA, Caprera, Cases, Ceccato, Cellarosi, C.M.G., Colombo, CRM, Dagrada, De Sanctis , Del Giovane, Delta, Dema, Di Rosa, Die Mesh, Dionis, DSG, Ebro, Ellena, Eurostyle, Facetti, Fagioli, FAZA, Ferrazzi, Fioretti, Fissore, Foglietti, Francis Lombardi, Genovese, Ghia, Giannini, Giannini Torino, Giuliani, Giunsella, GMS, Guarnieri, IPS, Italdesign, IWR, Juncosa, Kangaroo, Lavazza, Lucky, Mantelli, Mantissa, Maplex, Marin, Marras, Martare, Michelotti, Moretti, Muccini, MZ, Naia, Narvin, Nipama, Ogna, Ol-Ga, ORSA, OSCA, OSI, OTAS , Paparusso, Patriarca, PBS, Pininfarina, Poponi, Prat, Radbourne, RAM, Renzini, Repetto, Sanchini, Savio, Scioneri, Siata Auto, Siata Española, Sibona & Basano, Silva, Sozzani, Spi-Car, Stylauto, Tadini, Tagliani, Tanesini, Tecno, Tony Kart, Touring, Transportation Concepts Company, Vaccari, Venaria, Vico, Vignale, Vittone, Wainer, Zagato.

This book is certainly recommended for Fiat 850 fans. It can still be found on the Internet, price without shipping costs is around € 30. You can of course also hve a look on my site; I have already devoted articles to many of these cars. And if it's not there yet it will be added slowly, but surely.

Siata 850 in Amsterdam

In 1968 or 1969 4 friends visited Amsterdam where they came across a nice little car. These days they would take a selfie with the four of them and this Siata, but back then it was a matter of a camera. So the three of them near the car and the fourth (my wife) behind the camera.

Fiat 850 Bertone Racer

The Fiat 850 Bertone Racer test on this site left me with a question: who imported this car in the Netherlands if it wasn't Leonard Lang? Thanks to the internet I didn't have to search long. It was Hans Maasland in Valkenburg, ZH. Of course he advertised and I am grateful to him for that.

The Fiat 850 El Sabry

Researching registrations of Fiat 850's in the Nederlands suddenly an El Sabry showed up. Never heard of it so immediately start looking on the internet. It turns out to be a kind of buggy, based on the technology of the Fiat 850 and built by G.A.M.C. in San Remo. It all ended after 80 cars were built.

In 2016 number 582 was put to auction in the States (by Mecum) and I was able to get some extra photos:

A Fiat 850 Spider with a happy ending?

Searching for images for my site I came across this picture and I thought "that's a Fiat 850 Spider". But what a strange rear end. The people on the sidewalk clearly thought so too.
Fiat 850 Spider Giunsella Pozzi Lampra

It turned out to be an 850 Spider with bodywork from Giunsella from Genoa. It was named "Pozzi Lampra".

Researching for more info I ended up in the Flickr-stream by Maurizio Boi. Nearly 80 pages, all filled with with sailing, flying and roadgoing history.

Francis Lombardi too has already been my site, a that time with some scanned photos from Quattroruote. The images below were shown on the Ruoteclassiche site and they are quite worthwhile: The famous Scorpione, with the engine of a Fiat 124.

Fiat 850's by Giovanni Moretti

I mentioned Giovanni Moretti's Fiat 850s too before: this short column. And Ruoteclassiche had beautiful photo's too. Lest we forget how a simple design can also be beautiful:

One of his better designs (in my opinion) is the 1000SC:

I had a short column on the Fiat 850's that Scioneri rebodied. On Ruoteclassiche's site I found a short article about this designer that included nice images of 850's and a number of his other creations.

Vignale too made variations on the Fiat 850 theme: Berlina, Special, Coupe and Spider got their share of redesigning.

Fiat 850 by Francis Lombardi

Francis Lombardi was one of the more prolific coachbuilders when it comes to the Fiat 850.
In this example, he used a Fiat 850 Special to end up with this creation called "Monza".

He converted the 850 Special into a Coupe, the "Grand Prix" of which a Targa version was built too.

The Coupe was also available with a tuned engine, including one from Giannini (with double overhead camshaft) and from Abarth, the famous 1300. Below the Scorpione with Abarth engine.

Unfortunately, not everything Lombardi built was very exciting. The Lucciola, for example, and the Smart (below) were not really very handsome cars.

Most of the times, when Abarth developped anything, Giannini couldn't stay behind. This one has a 980 cc engine (based on an 850 Special engine) delivering 84 SAE hp at 6200 rpm and a 160 km/h top speed. The combination of chrome strip and stripe on the flank is strange.

A Fiat 850 Coupe by Michelotti

Giovanni Michelotti has  made many designs for many car manufacturers but with Fiat he is best known for the Shellette, a beach car based on the Fiat 850 (although the first basis of this design was a DAF). The Shellette has become a must have for people who have too much money. One was sold at Bonhams in 2016.

Michelotti 850 Shellette

Michelotti also designed a 2 + 2 Coupe based on the Fiat 850 and here we see quite a few style elements from other cars:

A bit of Reliant Scimitar on the front and Opel Kadett B Coupe on the profile and rear end.

Lombardi Lucciola. Nice Fiat 850 or not?

Francis Lombardi between 1947 and 1973 designed several models based on Fiat's. The most famous is probably the Grand Prix, but the Lucciola's (4-door versions of 600 and 850) wee also built in small numbers. Here I collected a few things about the Fiat 850 Lucciola.

He also had an idea for a 2-door, the "Smart", based on the Fiat 850 Special:

Well done, these Fiat 850's by Caprera

Chances are you've never heard of Carrozzeria Caprera but they designed one of the most beautiful cars based on the 850: The Caprera Berlinetta. Very little to be found on the internet so enjoy this photo:

Caprera 850 Berlinetta

In their enthousiasm, a Belvedere was built too, a Familiare based on the 850 Berlina. Finally you could take your weekend groceries with you in one go.

Their largest business achievement was the construction of steel sliding roofs:

Not a lot of information can be found about these sliding roofs too so I am happy with some pictures from Quattroruote.

Not really mother's finest, this Fiat 850 by Scioneri

When Fiat introduced the 850 in 1964, the Italian bodybuilders immediately wanted one to show their designing abilities. And to be fair, there were times that their names were more beautiful than their designs. Take Scioneri from Savigliano (what a nice name) who built a 5 seater Coupe and a Spider based on a design by Michelotti. Not really mother's finest but based on a Fiat 850! That's what counts here.

Samas Yeti 850

And now, for something completely different!

Samas Yeti 850

In the late sixties of the last century, in Italy a lot of work was done on the design of special models and prototypes with four-wheel drive. And sometimes that led to a (limited) series production. This was the case with the Yeti, a small off-road vehicle designed by the designer of the Ferves Ranger. The car had a box frame that showed little aerodynamics.

Samas Yeti 850 ontwerp

The first examples had the engine of the Fiat 850 and the Yeti was the first off-road vehicle with four-wheel drive AND four-wheel steering built in Italy. There was a very small series production in 1968, but despite all the technical innovations, the Yeti was not very successful and actually did not progress beyond the experimental prototype phase. Even when SAMAS (Società Albese Meccanica Autoveicoli Speciali), another company from Alba in Piemonte, took over production, the Yeti was not a success despite many changes to the original model.

Samas Yeti 850 zijkant

Samas Yeti 850 achter

Samas started by replacing the engine with that of the Fiat 127 (903 cc), which was placed in the front in the new version, instead of just behind the rear axle as on the 850. Other technical adjustments were the 4-speed gearbox of the Fiat 124 and the differential of the Alfa Romeo Giulia. There also a power take-off was available on request with which it was possible to drive various equipment (generators, sprinklers, water pumps, winches, etc.). This transformed the Yeti 903 into an industrial or agricultural all-rounder.

Samas Yeti 850 motor

The 4x4 drivetrain had CV joints on both the wheel sides and the differential sides, with a total gear ratio (with two differentials) of 1: 4.555. Thanks to the 4-wheel steering, the Yeti 903 could turn within 3 meters. Average consumption 1 in 12 on the road. When used off-road it was 3 liters per hour. Top speed was approximately 100 km per hour (3 km per hour was the minimum off-road speed). The Yeti could handle slopes of up to 80%.

Samas Yeti 850 helling

There were 5 seats and a maximum of 50 kg of luggage could be taken with 5 people on board, or 2 people and 330 kg. Curb weight was 900 kg and the tank had a 40 liters capacity.
In 1973, Samas also presented a design of a Yeti 6x6 version, but it was never produced.

TriVette Fiat 850

TriVette met Fiat 850 techniek

Just about every Italian coachbuilder and tuner has ventured to the Fiat 850. Outside of Italy little happened on the derivation front. But when an American starts work on an 850, it's bound to be very spectacular. Bob Keyes built the TriVette between 1974 and 1978. Not many, only 27 of which 25 with Fiat 850 technology (for the other two a VW Beetle was used as a donor). One of those 25 had an engine with a PBS cylinder head and two Weber 40 DCOEs. When this car was delivered, a top speed of well above 200 km / h was achieved.

The history:
This TriVette was designed in 1973 and was licensed as a motorcycle in California. Bob chose the technique of the 850 because, as this website says, it also had excellent fuel consumption in addition to reliable engines, which was useful at the time of the oil embargo of those days. Especially in a vehicle of just 500 kg. That weight was divided by an extremely strong tubular steel frame with a polyester body. Instruments, like rear suspension and front brake, came from scrapped 850s (the TriVette was only built when the 850 was already out of production). In addition to the first generation, there has also been a second, specially developed for the police as a pursuit vehicle. This is because the police Fords struggled to keep up with most speeding offenders. This is as crazy as it gets (and if you ask me, no standard size USA cop will fit in a TriVette).

One was recently sold for $ 18,000, so if you want one, save up.
